REPOST: W.O.C.K On Vinyl - 21 Years of Rock N Roll: A Tribute to 'Rock Around The Clock' (1977)

.
Before things get too serious here at Rock On Vinyl, I thought it might be fun to post a song / album at the end of each month, that could be categorized as being either Weird, Obscure, Crazy or just plain Korny.
.
"Rock Around the Clock" is a rock and roll song in the 12-bar blues format written by Max C. Freedman and James E. Myers (the latter under the pseudonym "Jimmy De Knight") in 1952. The best-known and most successful rendition was recorded by Bill Haley and His Comets in 1954. It was a number one single on both the US and UK charts and also re-entered the UK Singles Chart in the 1960s and 1970s.

It was not the first rock and roll record, nor was it the first successful record of the genre (Bill Haley had American chart success with "Crazy Man, Crazy" in 1953, and in 1954, "Shake, Rattle and Roll" reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart). Haley's recording nevertheless became an anthem for rebellious Fifties youth and is widely considered to be the song that, more than any other, brought rock and roll into mainstream culture around the world. The song is ranked No. 158 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. [extract from wikipedia]
.
21 years of Rock and Roll, "Rock around the Clock" was released in 1977 to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the release of Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock," 2SM and its sister radio stations, 3XY in Melbourne and 4IP in Brisbane, put out a re-make of the song with a host of stars doing the vocals including: Glenn Shorrock, Shirley Strachan, John Paul Young, Daryl Braithwaite, Renee Geyer and Frankie J Holden.
.
The rear sleeve states:
'The record that launched the Rock 'n' Roll era became a hit in Australia in July, 1956. It proved to be one of the most fantastic hits of all time with collective sales estimated at over 22 million. 'Rock around the Clock' has been waxed in thirty-five different languages with over 140 versions globally'.

2SM/3XY/4IP with the ANZ Bank commissioned the cream of Australian rock talent to record this limited edition tribute to 21 years of Rock 'n' Roll. Hope you enjoy it."
.
.
The artists appear by courtesy of:
Glenn Shorrock - E.M.I. Records
Graeme 'Shirley' Strachan & Frankie J. Holden - Mushroom Records
John Paul Young - Albert Productions
Daryl Braithwaite - Razzle Records
Renee Geyer - R.C.A. Records
.
This is a rather Obscure 7" Single as it was only released in Australia, in relatively small numbers and therefore it earns a place in this month's WOCK On Vinyl. Perhaps it should be renamed to:
"WOCK around the Clock" ! Ripped from vinyl in FLAC format and includes full artwork.

Sherbet - The Sherbet Phenomenon (1981) + Bonus Tracks

(Australian 1969-1984)

'The Sherbet Phenomenon' - How else might one explain a run of twenty consecutive hit singles (to say nothing of five for Daryl), twelve albums yielding ten platinum and eight gold discs, every possible Australian music award of the seventies and the honor of being not only the biggest domestic record sellers of all but the first act to sell a million dollars worth of records in Australia.

Sherbet were the first Australian band to insist on taking their music to the people - all the people - on long, tedious national tours.

Lugging seven tons of equipment, they would set out in Greyhound coaches for up to three months - poking their noses into dark corners of the continent which had not seen a rock band since The Easybeats in 1965. They did this not once or twice ... the figure is more like twenty.

Those who were a part of those intense and exciting spectacles called 'Sherbet concerts' will always remember not just the carefully orchestrated visual majesty or the powerfully constructed music, they will also recall the extraordinary warmth and rapport which existed between the stage and the stalls; from the Hordern Pavilion to remote North Queensland council halls.

This release is as close to the perfect Sherbet collection as one might wish to possess on a single vinyl album. Nineteen pieces of carefully crafted and executed pop music from five guys who understood it better than any other Australian band before or after them. Listen to the music ... remember the magic.

FREE THE PEOPLE
The third single and second hit Number five in Sydney in November, l971. A Delaney ond Bonnie track featuring original bassist Bruce Worrall on tuba.

YOU'RE ALL WOMAN
Written by old mate (and later touring companion) Ted Mulry, this was the first track to feature Tony Mitchell, and the first hit to crack the Melbourne top twenty (thirteen), in August 1972.

HOUND DOG
A raucous version of the Lieber/Staller rock classic which found its way on to tape in around three hours. Top thirty in July, 1973 For many years this was the obligatory Sherbet show closer.

CASSANDRA
The first indication of the pop masterpieces that were to come and a perfect national top five summer hit, in October, 1973

SLIPSTREAM
The extremely ambitious title track to their third album and possibly the first truly expensive track to be cut in this country. A national top ten single in July 1974.

SILVERY MOON
Also from 'Slipstream', a highly commercial ballad and another national top ten hit in September 1974.

YOU'RE MY WORLD
Daryl Braithwaite's first solo hit and what a hit! A double platinum national number one (before Sherbet had had done it) over Christmas 1974 and the key to breaking Sherbet in the mass market.

SUMMER LOVE
Another pop classic and the first single to be released in England. National top five. From this point there was really no looking back - March 1975.

LIFE
The dramatic title cut to the 'Life ... Is For Living' album, featuring Clive Shakespeare on acoustic classical guitar. As a single, number seven nationally in August 1975.

ONLY ONE YOU/MATTER OF TIME
A powerful double sided hit from the 'Life' album, One side a weepy ballad, the other a rolling rocker featuring Garth Porter on lead vocals. National top ten in November 1975.

Sherbet 'Howzat Era' 1976
(L-R) Tony Mitchell, Alan Sandow, Daryl Braithwaite, Harvey James, Garth Porter

CHILD'S PLAY
A top ten single in February, 1976 and marked Clive Shakespeare's final recording with Sherbet.

HOWZAT!
From the rubble of turmoil arose - an even stronger Sherbet, with new guitarist Harvey James and a first single that rose to number one in Australia, Thailand and many parts of Europe, and number two in England. From the 'Howzat' album in May, 1976. This was the beginning of Sherbet as an international entity.

ROCK ME GENTLY
A pleasant, soft rocker which had the unfortunate task of following a gorilla like 'Howzat'. It made top ten in October 1976.

YOU'VE GOT THE GUN
Featured as a 'double A side' with 'Rock Me Gently', this was a rather more sophisticated reworking of their original 1972 single.

LOVE HAS NO PRIDE
Daryl's fourth solo single, a quality version of Eric Koz's classic ballad. A hit in April 1977.

MAGAZINE MADONNA
The first single from the 'Photoplay' album which, like 'Howzat', was released all over the world. A top 5 national hit in June 1977.

SLIPPIN' AWAY
The mature and imaginative opening track from the eleventh album titled simply 'Sherbet'. This album was recorded at United Western Studios in Los Angeles. A number 22 hit in March 1978.

ANOTHER NIGHT ON THE ROAD
A second song from the 'Sherbet' album and a band favourite which tells the story of their decade of touring, recording and playing a game so very few people ever really understand. A number 17 hit in August 1978.   [Taken from album Liner Notes]

This post consists of FLACs ripped from my 'Hammard' vinyl and includes full album artwork and label scans. Because Hammard Records were a low budget label that released a variety of music genre during the 70's and 80's, I usually tended to avoid them due to their poor sound quality (similar to K-Tel records). However, in this case I made an exception due to the great 'bang for bucks' that this compilation offered - over 60 minutes of music.
Of course, the compromise is the lack of bass that exists with these type of releases, however I have applied some minor bass enhancement to this rip to improve the sound.

One other gripe that I have with this release is the inclusion of two of Daryl Braithwaite's solo releases, at the expense of excluding some classic Sherbet tracks; such as "Freedom", "Wishing Well" and a personnel favourite "Wild Love" (from their Slipstream album, with its heavy, funky bass line). I have therefore added these as Bonus Tracks.

Daryl Braithwaite - Rise (1991) + Bonus Tracks

(Australian Solo 1973 -Present)
.
It would be hard to find a voice that captures the mood of a song more perfectly than this one. It’s the voice that soars with inspiration, soul and warmth. The voice of course belongs to Australian singer Daryl Braithwaite.
In a distinguished career spanning more than 30 years, Daryl Braithwaite is one of Australia’s award winning premier performers.
His initial success as a singer came with Sherbet, a band which forever remains in the history books of Australian music. Throughout the 70’s, Sherbet produced 20 national Top 40 singles and were the first Australian band to top the one million dollar mark in album sales in the country with a total of 15 albums and 30 singles to the credit with songs like “Summer Love” becoming the highest selling single of 1975. And, “Howzat” not only a #1 hit in Australia, but also achieved #2 in England.
.
Following the success of Sherbet, Daryl returned to the Australian music scene in a very big way as a solo performer in 1988 with the release of the phenomenally successful album “Edge” (see earlier posting) which spent well over a year in the national charts.
Edge spawned four hit singles with “As The Days Go By”, “All I Do”, “Let Me Be”, and the gold single “One Summer”. The album itself topped the ARIA charts in 1989 and became the highest selling CD in CBS Australia’s history. During this period, Daryl toured extensively not only in Australia, but also in Canada, USA, UK and Europe adding to the incredible sales figures for “Edge”.
Braithwaite went on to have a number of solo hits in the early 1990s, including "The Horses" the beautiful Rickie Lee Jones penned ballad that featured Margaret Urlich. "The Horses" went to number 1 on the national ARIA Chart and won a richly deserved ARIA Award. Daryl continued to dominate the airwaves with three other single releases from "Rise", "Higher Than Hope" (a song he co-wrote with Simon Hussey which also became a Top 50 hit in the US). "Don't Hold Back Your Love" and "Nothing To Lose". By the end of 1991, Braithwaite's "Rise" album had become Australia's biggest selling CD of the year, and "Edge" had become the best selling album ever released by Sony Music Australia to that time.
"People wondered if there was a lot of pressure going into the recording of Rise", says Daryl. "But I applied the same philosophy that I adopted from "Edge". To make an album that means something to me and hopefully other people would relate to those feelings."
.
For a blast from the past, have a listen to the Jono and Dano's fun filled radio interview (GOLD 104.3 Melbourne - 1/9/2010) with Daryl when he reflects on his years with Sherbet and talks about his latest album 'Beautiful Day'
.
The rip provided here was taken from CD at 320kps and includes full album artwork and lyrics. This was Daryl's final release on vinyl and I have included some bonus acoustics recordings of "Rise" and "Horses", which were released on his single 'Breakin The Rules' in 1993, along with the B-Side to his 'Horses' Single "I Can't Wait" (a non-album track).

Daryl Braithwaite - Edge (1988) + Bonus Tracks

(Australian Solo 1973 -Present)
.
Daryl Braithwaite's initial success as a singer came with Sherbet, a band which forever remains in the history books of Australian music. Throughout the 70's, Sherbet produced 20 national Top 40 singles and were the first Australian band to top the one million dollar mark in album sales in the country with a total of 15 albums and 30 singles to the credit with songs like "Summer Love" becoming the highest selling single of 1975. And, "Howzat" not only a #1 hit in Australia, but also achieved #2 in England. However, while singing for Sherbet, Daryl decided to pursue a solo career and in 1973 he played the lead role in the Australian production of the rock opera Tommy. The following year, amidst unfounded rumours that he would soon be leaving Sherbet,

Braithwaite began his official solo career with a cover of the ballad "You're My World", which went to #1 in Australia. More hits followed throughout the 1970s, including a cover of The Small Faces' "Afterglow (Of Your Love)". An infrequent songwriter, Braithwaite's solo career has been dominated by cover songs. Curiously for the 'album rock' era, Braithwaite's solo recordings from 1974-78 appeared only on 7-inch singles. A 'best of' solo LP was compiled in 1978, but Braithwaite's first original full-length album as a solo artist (Out On The Fringe) didn't appear until 1979, during a time when Sherbet had briefly broken up. He was crowned Australia's King of Pop by TV Week over three consecutive years from 1975 to 1977.

By 1980, the members of Sherbet were back together and had renamed themselves The Sherbs. At this point, Braithwaite put his solo career on hold to concentrate on work with his bandmates. However, The Sherbs had only a very few minor hits and broke up in 1984. For a period of time after the break-up, Braithwaite played regular gigs, but as of 1987, he had left the music industry and was working as a builder of footpaths for less than 200 Australian dollars a week.

Following the success of Sherbet, Daryl returned to the Australian music scene in a very big way as a solo performer in 1988 with the release of the phenomenally successful album "Edge" which spent well over a year in the national charts. Edge spawned four hit singles with "As The Days Go By", "All I Do", "Let Me Be", and the gold single "One Summer". The album itself topped the ARIA charts in 1989 and became the highest selling CD in CBS Australia's history. During this period, Daryl toured extensively not only in Australia, but also in Canada, USA, UK and Europe adding the to incredible sales figures for 'Edge'.

Braithwaite went on to have a number of solo hits in the early 1990s, including the Australian #1 "The Horses", a cover of a Rickie Lee Jones recording written by Jones and Walter Becker. He also made his first US chart appearance as a solo artist at #47 with the 1991 single "Higher than Hope", a song he co-wrote with Simon Hussey. By the end of 1991, Braithwaite's 'Rise' album had become Australia's biggest selling CD of the year, and 'Edge' had become the best selling album ever released by Sony Music Australia to that time.

Daryl continues to record and tour today and is fondly remembered as a mainstay of Countdown. The friendly rivalry between Daryl and Shirley Strachan on the Countdown set still stirs emotions today. Sherbet or Skyhooks? You choose! In 2006 the boys from Sherbet returned to the stage to blow away audiences in the Countdown Spectacular Tour. [extracts from wikipedia and Daryl's webiste)
