W.O.C.K On Vinyl: Various Artists - The Cocoa-Cola Australian Music Day (1992)

On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future. Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788.

With respect to Australia's Music Industry, we can be very proud of the contributions that our Aussie Musos have made in entertaining people from every nation with music and song, with many of our artists achieving world wide acclaim.

The following CD was released in 1992 with the support of Coca-Cola and Brashs record stores to help promote both new and veteran Australian Artists, some of whom have gone on to become stars in their own right.

Whether or not you still support Australia Day, in light of the recent controversy that has arisen with the validity of what Australia Day represents, I hope you will still support the spirit of the day, where we all come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian.

W.O.C.K On Vinyl: Billy Thorpe - Sunshine Friends (Australia Day Tribute)

Therefore, I would like to celebrate this Australia Day by posting a lost tribute track recorded by one of our country's finest and most respected artist more the 40 years ago. None other than Billy Thorpe (and his Aztecs). I hope you enjoy it and have a great Australia Day !

.
Billy Thorpe - Sunshine Friends
Songwriters often say some songs take five minutes to write, while others can take five years to get right.  The late and great Aussie rocker Billy Thorpe and his band the Aztecs toiled away for three weeks on a track which never saw the light of day. Until now.
Original Aztecs rhythm guitarist Tony Barber recalls arguing with Thorpe over a new song they had written. It was called "Sunshine Friends".

"We were head to head, slogging away, arguing like crazy,'' Barber said. "And believe me, you had not argued until you'd argued with Billy.''
The reason why they were so fired up was because they realised this was not just another song.
It was a song about Australia, which had become home for the two Brits.
"It was a song about country, a place we'd come to as migrants and loved dearly. And we were trying to convey that in the song.
"We just wanted to say, `Thanks Australia'.''

Barber can't exactly remember when the track was recorded, but estimates it is more than 30 years old.
They put the song on a cassette, meaning to do something with it, but as does happen, says Barber, "life takes over''.
Barber and Thorpe went on to form a soft toy company called Sunshine Friends, but the track was buried.

Just a few months ago, Barber says he found the cassette bearing the tune in his shed.
"I was sifting through some stuff and I found it in my fishing bag,'' he said. "Well, where else would you put it?''
Barber approached Thorpe's widow Lynn Thorpe with the idea of releasing the song.
"I said to Lynn, `We should try and get this thing played on Australia Day, it would be nice gesture'.''
The track was then remastered in a studio.

Thorpe had a string of hits in `70s with the Aztecs, but is best known for the song, "Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy". He died of a heart attack in February 2007.

W.O.C.K On Vinyl: God Bless Australia (Ampol) 1968

On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. Therefore, I would like to celebrate Australia Day by posting this Party Classic by one of our country's well known and respected T.V / Radio celebrities from the 60 / 70 / 80's. I hope you enjoy it and have a great Australia Day !

.
God Bless Australia
[Liner Notes]
On the 28th January, 1968, as a tribute to Australia Day (26th Jan), a three minute film was televised which caused tremendous interest. The music behind the film was an entirely new conception of probably the best known Australian tune - "Waltzing Matilda".

Mr. Jack O'Hagan, who has given Australia so many wonderful songs, recognised that Waltzing Matilda has come to mean more to the Australian people than just a bush ballad. He rewrote the original Banjo Patterson words which were then beautifully orchestrated and arranged by an Australian chorus and orchestra, at GTV-9 Melbourne, with the words sung by Neil Williams.

Ampol, one of Australia's largest petroleum companies, have always been first to sponsor Australian talent in all forms, backed the production and bought it to the attention of the Australian people in the form of a film on Australia, the country and the background.

Ampol did this as a tribute to Jack O'Hagan, a fine old Australian, and in the belief that on hearing this music the Australian people would respond to a proud song about a proud country it seems they have.

This post consists of MP3 (320kps) ripped from an Ampol 45 release, featuring a full length version and an edited version of the song "God Bless Austrlia". Please note that a flexi disc was also released at the same time by Allans Music to commemorate the occasion, which featured the original version of Waltzing Matilda on the flip side.  Alas, I do not have access to this release to post, but if anyone out there has a copy, I'd be very interested in acquiring a rip of this release.

W.O.C.K On Vinyl - Judith Durham, Russell Hitchcock & Mandawuy Yunupingu: I Am Australian (1997)

.
On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future. With respect to Australia's Music Industry, we can be very proud of the contributions that our Aussie Musos have made in entertaining people from every nation with music and song, with many of our artists achieving world wide aclaim. Therefore, I would like to celebrate Australia Day by posting this wonderful Australian Anthem recorded by some of our country's best musical artists. I hope you enjoy it and have a great Australia Day !

.
In September, 1997 as her Mona Lisas album was being released in Australia, Judith Durham (The Seekers) found herself back in a studio to record a new single, "I Am Australian".
The popularity of this anthem, which Judith had already recorded with The Seekers on the 25 Year Reunion Celebration album and video, prompted EMI to ask her to join Russell Hitchcock and Mandawuy Yunupingu, respectively lead singers of the international chart-toppers Air Supply and Indigenous band Yothu Yindi, to record 'I Am Australian' as a single, with producer Charles Fisher.
Within days of its release it had reached #17 in the Australian Top 40. For the first time since 'The Olive Tree' in 1967, Dudith's name was in the charts!

For those who don`t know much about Mandawuy Yunupingu, this great man was an artist, mentor and ambassador who galvanized Australia’s indigenous and non-indigenous people and brought contemporary Aboriginal music to the world through his group 'Yothu Yindi'. Sadly, he died last year at the age of 56. The former Australian of the Year and ARIA Hall of Famer died at his home in Yirrkala in Australia’s Northern Territory.  Yunupingu was a trailblazer who became the first indigenous Australian to be appointed a school principal and the musical group he founded went on to become Australia's most successful and highest-profile indigenous act.

Russel Hitchcock is also one of our best Aussie singers and I would place him in the same league as Farnham and Barnsy

This is the definitive version of what is a great, great, song and as we celebrate Australia Day today, let's pay homage to some of our great Australian Artists.  Ripped from CD in MP3 (320kps) format.

W.O.C.K On Vinyl - Australia Day: The Happy Hour Brigade (1977)

.
Before things get too serious here at Rock On Vinyl, I thought it might be fun to post a song / album at the end of each month, that could be categorized as being either Weird, Obscure, Crazy or just plain Korny.

Back in the mid 70's, Aussie Rock was really starting to take off in the States, with artists like Billy Thorpe, Brian Cadd and Russell Morris becoming household names while working overseas.
The Happy Hour Brigade
It was around this time that a group of Aussie expatriates working in Los Angeles decided to get together and record an impromptu ditty based on the American 'Happy Hour' for which they were christened 'The Happy Hour Brigade'.

The clip was recorded in L.A in Jan 1977 with Daryl Cotton (ex Zoot), Steve Kipner (producer and song writer for Olivia Newton John), Ray Burgess (host of Flashez way back in 1977), Billy Thorpe (aka Aztecs), Brian Cadd, Russell Morris and Rick Springfield (ex Zoot).

A lament for all the Aussie expats, the song was never released, however, a video recording of the performance was made and has been preserved on YouTube.  Rick Springfield and Billy Thorpe were some of many Aussie rockers who moved to LA in the 70's to live. Most of the others in the clip came home once they got their Green Card work permit.

Ray Burgees, Billy Thorpe and Brian Cadd - Drinkin' Tinies

                                                              Main Chorus

Well we flew in from Australia, we were aussie one and all, and we thought that we were poets so we wrote it on the wall.

Now all of us expatriates, we thought we'd form this club, cause Los Angeles is a long long way from the Ettamogah pub...

Well it seems that in America, it is the thing to do, go drinking in the afternoon, although that's nothing new!

But they do it with a difference, and they do it with some class, but the drinks are cheap from 4 till 6, knock you on your ass

So, for this post I have included both an MP3 rip of the Happy Hour Brigade lament plus the Videoclip itself. Also included are screen shots of the boys in action, but nothing quite compares to watching the videoclip itself.

Southern Sons - Selftitled (1990) + Bonus Tracks

(Australian 1990-1995)
..
On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.
Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Syd
ney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788.
Because Australia is often referred to as the grea
t 'Southern Land', I have decided to post this great debut album by the Aussie band the 'Southern Sons' in recognition of this great nation that we live in.
.
Southern Sons was created as a direct result of songwriter Phil Buckle's collaboration on six of the twelve songs on John Farnham's 'Chain Reaction' album (1990). Phil's group The State was signed to Farnham manager Glenn Wheatley's Wheatley Brothers records, and had released one album. Hearing John's treatment of his songs, Phil Buckley wanted to replace himself as lead vocalist and recruited John Farnham sound-a-like singer/guitarist Jack Jones, who had auditioned for the band previously but was considered too young.
.
The new group changed its name to Southern Sons and made its public debut as support act for John's 'Chain Reaction Tour', Phil and Jack also having played on the album, doing double duty as members of John's backing band. 1990 saw the release of their debut album, 'Southern Sons' (which spawned three top ten hit singles) and a five-track EP, 'Train Tracks', released to coincide with Phil and Jack's return to Southern Sons duties after a European tour with Farnham.
..
Their second album in 1992, 'Nothing But the Truth', came with the departure of guitarist Peter Bowman. After two singles, including "You Were There" one of three Phil Buckley songs in the Australian Ballet production of 'Beauty and the Beast', "Nothing But the Truth" was re-released, with different cover artwork featuring a new look Jack Jones, to include the single "Silent Witness". Southern Sons third and final album, 'Zone', was released in 1995, self-produced with former member Peter Bowman. Its lead single, "Don't Tell Me", featured vocals from Men At Work's Colin Hay.
.
The individual members of the band have remained in the field. Now based in the US, Virgil Donati collaborated with Tommy Emmanuel on his album 'The Journey' album and toured as a member of Tina Arena's backing band for her 'In Deep Tour'. Peter Bowman co-wrote songs with Debra Byrne for her 'Sleeping Child' album and collaborated with Tommy Emmanuel on his albums 'The Journey' and 'The Journey Continues'. Jack Jones provided guitar for Debra Byrne on the 'Sleeping Child' album and for Bachelor Girl on their 'Waiting for the Day' album. He also toured as a member of Tina Arena's backing band for her 'In Deep Tour' as well as serving as a member of John Farnham's backing band for the 'I Can't Believe He's 50 Tour'. Jack is signed to Gotham Records and is currently recording his debut solo album. Phil Buckle co-wrote songs with John Farnham for the album '… Then Again' , with David Hirschfelder and David Hobson for their album 'In This Room' and with Rick Price for his album 'Another Place'. This latter album was also co-produced and co-performed by Phil. Most recently he was writing and performing as a member of a new band, Sneak. Jack Jones re-emerged in 2002 as Irwin Thomas. Jack Jones

Born in New York City in 1971, Jack Jones arrived in Australia as a ten year old. Even as a youngster, Jack began showing an incredible talent with his guitar playing. At fourteen Jack was already playing professionally in both cover and original bands. At the same time, he was earning a reputation as a very accomplished and well respected studio musician.
After heading back to the United States for several years to further study his craft, Jack eventually returned to Australia and joined the successful 90's band ‘Southern Sons’ as lead singer/guitarist. With hits such as “Heart In Danger”, “Always & Ever”, “Hold Me In Your Arms”, “Waiting For That Train”, “I Can’t Wait Any Longer”, “Lead Me To Water”, “Silent Witnesses”, & “You Were There”. His vocal ability was highly praised by both fans and musical peers alike… He not only enjoyed success in Australia, but in Asia, Canada, Germany, and pockets throughout Europe. Confirming he was a major talent worthy of recognition.
He has toured and recorded as singer/guitarist with the likes of John Farnham, Glen Shorrock (Little River Band), Tina Arena, Tommy Emmanuel, James Reyne, Rick Price, Merryl Bainbridge, Graham Goble (Little River Band), Richard Clapton, Gary Garry Beers (INXS), Dweezil Zappa, Ahmet Zappa, Jeff Jacobs (Foriener), Schuyler Deale (Michael Bolton, Billy Joel), Crystal Talefiero (Billy Joel), Deb Byrne, Kylie Minogue, Doc Neeson, Stoolz Roachman & the Idiot Sevilles, Renee Geyer, Bachelor Girl, Anthony Warlow and countless others.
His solo acoustic shows accentuate both his vocal and guitar playing talents and have proven to be highly successful with audiences and organisers alike.
.
Virgil Donati
Virgil had started his career in his mid teens during the 70's as drummer for the brilliant hard rock band Taste, which evolved from an earlier band Cloud 9. At age 19 Donati travelled to the U.S. to study with Philly Joe Jones, and at Dick Groves School in Los Angeles. He also took lessons from snare drum specialist Murray Spivack.
Donati returned to Australia at the age of 21 where his career finally took off. He played jazz with Allan Zavod and Brian Brown followed by a couple of years in the rock/soul influenced Peter Cupples Band during the early 80's. During the late 1980s Donati's drumming was a feature of the Melbourne-based jazz-rock fusion band 'Changes' (extract from Wikipedia)
.
Phil Buckle
Phil Buckle's songwriting career began in the early 90's when he penned hits for his own band, the highly successful Southern Sons and Australian recording legend John Farnham.
In 1990 Phil was awarded the ARIA song of the Year for 'Burn for You'. During this period he achieved 3 top ten hits and a double platinum album with Southern Sons and a six times platinum album Chain Reaction with John Farnham.
In 1991 he was nominated again for the ARIA Song of the Year for "Always and Ever" and received the APRA most played song of the Year for "Heart in Danger". In this year he also received the highest Australian accolade of APRA Songwriter of the Year.
A prolific songwriter in the last couple of years Phil has also written tracks for Shannon Noll, Adam Harvey, Anthony Callea, Deni Hines, David Hobson, Belinda Emmett and Dean Geyer as well as contributing significantly to the Australian vocal Production Music label (extract from unippm.com.au)
.
Album Review
This is a great release and well worth the listen if only for three songs that are the best on offer. "Heart in Danger" is an absolute monster AOR song, "Always and Ever" another great tune, but "Hold Me In Your Arms" is pure bliss, a truly wonderful ballad. It might be an album that may be a bit too soft for some but the quality is what makes it so good. Singer Jack Jones would've been an ideal replacement for Steve Perry (yes he is that good, and better than Augeri) and in some ways has a voice not too dissimilar to John Farnham. This debut album is a true classic and a must for any collector of Aussie Rock.
.
This post consists of a FLAC rip taken from an out of print CD and full album artwork for both LP and CD. I have also included two bonus live tracks taken from their 'Train Tracks' E.P (thanks to Deutros at Friday On My Mind) along with two B-side Singles that were not release on an LP.

Goldfields Rock - Central Victorian Rock 'n' Roll (1980)

On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian. It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future. Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788
A big part of my upbringing involved being educated in Australian History and topics such as the goldrush days and bushrangers were always favourites of mine.
Therefore, I would like to celebrate Australia Day by posting some music that has connections with the goldrush days / bushrangers. I hope you enjoy these and have a great Australia Day !

.
(Various Australian Artists 1980)
.
The first major gold rushes took place in 1851 near Bathurst in New South Wales and at Ballarat in Victoria.
A sheep station hut keeper, Christopher Thomas Peters, had also found gold in Castlemaine, Victoria, but kept his discovery quiet. He and three friends earned a year's pay in a month by chipping gold from rocks with a hammer and chisel. However, word of the fabulous richness of the diggings soon got out and thousands of people started to explore the creeks around the area, finding gold close to the surface.
Castlemaine is a city in Victoria, Australia, in the Goldfields region of Victoria about 120 kilometres northwest by road from Melbourne, and about 40 kilometres from the major provincial centre of Bendigo. Castlemaine began as a gold rush boomtown in 1851, it has since become a major regional centre known for its industrial and cultural institutions including the oldest continuously operating theatre in mainland Australia, the Theatre Royal.
Bendigo is a major regional city in the state of Victoria, Australia, located very close to the geographical centre of the state and approximately 150 kilometres north west of the state capital Melbourne.
Bendigo is one of the most significant Victorian era boomtowns in Australia. Gold was discovered in 1851 at The Rocks on Bendigo Creek and the Bendigo Valley was found to be a rich alluvial field where gold could easily be extracted. News of the finds intensified the Victorian gold rush bringing an influx of migrants to the city from around the world within a year and transforming it from a station to a major settlement in the newly proclaimed Colony of Victoria.
Bendigo is notable for its Victorian architectural heritage and gold mining history. Since 1851 over 22 million ounces of gold have been extracted from its goldmines, making it the highest producing 19th Century goldfield in Australia in the nineteenth century and the largest gold mining economy in Eastern Australia.
.
This record includes four tracks from 3 different bands who played in the Central Victorian District in the early 8o's. The bands were Sharp Toys, Cruize and Public Enemy (who by the way had a distinct 'Angels' sound to their act). The recording was made at GCR's Community Radio Studio in Castlemaine, Victoria. The 4 track equipment used to do the recording was purchased with a small grant from the Australian Film Commission. The record itself was cut at Astor Records, Clayton, Victoria.
Goldfields Community Radio Co-operative Limited was the managing body of a group of people seeking to establish a community controlled FM broadcasting station - 3CCC-FM for Central Victoria. This recording was one of the several projects that GCR undertook to raise funds to finance their station. As I acquired this LP at a flea market I am unsure how many pressings were made, but I would suspect that it would have been a limited release. As there is next to no information available on these three bands - I suspect they didn't go onto bigger and better things, however, they were all talented musicians and their original compositions showed great potential.
Rip was taken from my vinyl copy at 320kps and includes full album artwork.
