A big influence on me at the time and I really loved going to see him and Ross Hannaford playing in a corner at the Grace Darling in Fitzroy later on when he'd occasionally venture – reluctantly – back into the spotlight. Superb lessons in how to construct a good song from go to whoa (as a lyricist, I think he's peerless - to wit, Mayday in Arcadia). My only grouches are his use of an American accent – surplus to requirements imho – and some dated production.<br /><br />I also seem to recall that he supported Tom Waits at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne the first time I saw TW.
