W.O.C.K On Vinyl - Born To Be Wild (Ozzy Osbourne & Miss Piggy - 1994)

Before things get too serious here at Rock On Vinyl, I thought it might be fun to post a song at the end of each month, that could be categorized as being either Weird, Obscure, Crazy or just plain Korny.

Yes, you did read that right. In 1994, the 'Prince of Darkness', pre-MTV contract Ozzy Osbourne “rocked the place down!” with Miss Piggy for the Muppets‘ cover album entitled 'Kermit Unpigged'.
Track 5 on this collaboration album starts with Miss Piggy arriving at the studio, and looks around for the rest of the Muppet group. She stumbles into a room where heavy metal performer Ozzy Osbourne is recording his next solo album, and she mutters, "Boy, did I pick the wrong door." But Osbourne is happy to see Miss Piggy, and invites her to come in for a raucous duet of "Born to Be Wild".
Collaboration is a somewhat inadequate term here, after all, it is Ozzy who does all the hard work on Steppenwolf‘s “Born to be Wild” (Miss Piggy just cracks cringe-worthy “jokes” and makes suggestive noises in the background). Seriously, though, “Prince of Darkness”, what happened to you? The number begins with Miss Piggy flattered that Ozzy is going to sing to her, and ends with her advising him "Ozzy, get off of the floor!". Perhaps you should have done a retake of Sabbath's "War Pigs" instead Ozzy !
The album's recording of "Born to be Wild" was also featured on disc 3 ("Duets") of Ozzy Osbourne's "Prince of Darkness" collector's box set released in 2005.
Anyhow - hope you enjoy this Crazy addition to the WOCK on Vinyl hall of fame.

Marc Bolan - The Marc Shows (1989)

Marc Bolan was an English singer-songwriter, guitarist and poet. He is best known as the founder, frontman, lead singer & guitarist for T. Rex, but also a successful solo artist. His music, as well as his highly original sense of style and extraordinary stage presence, helped create the glam rock era which made him one of the most recognisable stars in British rock music [extract from wikipedia]
In the summer of 1977 Granada TV announced a coup... Marc Bolan the first Glam Rock hero of the seventies was to host a new look series of six shows. Each show was to go out at 4.45 on a Wednesday afternoon and would feature many new, up and coming bands as well as songs from the host with his own band T.Rex. Established artists also played on the Marc Shows, in particular David Bowie and captured in this rare YouTube Clip

This announcement was met with some skepticism as the general appeal of Marc Bolan was no longer in the view of some critics of any worth and after all the hits of 1971 & 1972 were no more. In actual fact between the years of 1970 and 1976 Marc Bolan appeared in the Top 30 every year and had he not lost his life would surely have been in the charts again in 1977.
arc Bolan did appeal to a whole new generation of fans he had very shrewdly taken a new up and coming punk bank on his 'Dandy In The Underworld' tour and he won the hearts and souls of many for doing so.
This compilation is special as it features songs that Marc never got the chance to take into the studios and record properly to feature on a new album. This compilation also gives a new dimension to some of the classics as well as featuring a great live version of 'Dandy In The Underworld'.
This album relies on the raw and sometimes thin backing associated with TV sound tracks of the seventies but this simply adds to the magical performances of the man so many of us loved then and still do now all these years ago [extract from linear notes on cassette tape]

For fans of a certain age, there is something impossibly magic about the Marc TV series. No matter that it was the last work Marc Bolan did before his death in September 1977; Marc was also incontrovertible evidence that, after three years of increasingly diminishing returns, Bolan was on his way back up. The new material that he debuted throughout the show's run was seldom less than excellent, while his taste in guests mixed the expected old farts and hopeful unknowns with the very best of the then-emergent new wave, and there was no doubting which side Bolan identified with. Evidence of this new outlook on music has since been spread across any number of 1976-1977 era demo and outtake collections. But Marc was its first public appearance, and when the Marc Shows album first arrived in the late '80s, fans seized upon it as though it were the Holy Grail -- which, in many ways, it was. Songs like "Sing Me a Song," "Endless Sleep," and his final 45, "Celebrate Summer," fizz with energies Bolan had not approached since the height of T. Rexstacy in 1972, while his approach to older material caught him fearlessly rearranging it to tie in, too, with his new energies. Had he not died that fall, who can say what he would have achieved? The Marc Shows is not perfect; the final show in the series found Bolan joined by David Bowie, with whom he played out the show's closing credits. That contribution is absent from this collection, and while it must be admitted that it sounds a lot better in memory than it does in reality, the omission rankles. As a snapshot of Bolan reemerging as a genuinely worthwhile force, however, this album is priceless.

This post consists of a mp3 rip (320kps) taken from my cassette tape of the Marc Shows which plays faultlessly. Some artwork is included, including cassette cover scans. This live recordings features two distinctly different versions of "Dandy In The Underworld" along with some other classic T.Rex tracks such as "I Love To Boogie", "Jeepster", "Hot Love" and "Get It On".
The only disappointment is that there is no dialogue by Bolan between tracks, which would have helped capture the full atmosphere of the recordings.

Various Artists - Classic Heavy Rock (1984)

(Various 70's/80's Rock Artists)

Released on the budget label Dino Music, this compilation of 70's and 80's heavy rock may not have been the ultimate collection of classic rock tracks, but it was one of the better offerings available in the late 80's.
Names such as Bad Company, Thin Lizzy and Ted Nugent stand out immediately, while there are many other great bands included such as: - Heart, Slade, Boston and not forgetting Australia's very own The Angels and Cold Chisel.
I owned this LP many moons ago, but managed to cook it on the back seat of my car while driving home from a friends place during an exceptional hot summer.
Luckily, I recently stumbled upon a CD release of this compilation while trawling my local flea market on a Sunday morning.
On revisiting this album and its title 'Classic Heavy Rock', I realised that it was missing some essential tracks to justify its title.
I have therefore taken the liberty of adding four additional tracks to the compilation, recorded by the true masters of rock: - Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Saxon and Blue Oyster Cult.

The Angels - Dark Room (1980)
The Angels were a hard rock band that formed in Adelaide, Australia in 1970. The band later relocated from Adelaide to Sydney and enjoyed huge local success until well into the 1990s. For the purposes of international release, their records were released under the names 'Angel City' and later 'The Angels From Angel City'.
Dark Room is the fourth album by Australian band 'The Angels', and was released in 1980.
It's the start of the acidic-ally meteoric rock anthem "No Secrets", an enormous landmark rock song by The Angels, the quintessential opening track of Dark Room, an important chapter in the rise of The Angels. But there is another other massive standout on this LP, "Face The Day".
The rest of the Dark Room album is unfortunately not as strong as these two superior songs, although other tracks of note are the slower, rolling Face The Day, the darkness of Night Comes Early and the harder rock and roll, to finish the album, of Devil's Gate, a more of a fun track.

Boston - Selftitled (1976)
At one time, Boston’s debut release was the fastest-selling debut album of all time. Nearly everything about this album is masterfully crafted, from the volume to the layering and everything in-between. The musicianship found in every song is superb. While Tom Scholz plays several instruments, his most notable is probably the guitar. Though there are many good musicians out there, that’s not where Boston makes it’s case. Take for instance the opening track “More Than a Feeling.” Aside from having one of the more recognizable riffs, the way everything come into place at just the right time is something few were able to do before Boston.
Even less are as capable after Boston. It’s difficult to explain without listening, but I can certainly try. Imagine a level of sound where the lead guitar is playing and the forefront, where it usually is. With Boston, Scholz found a way to make everything else, from the drums, to the organ, to the bass also be very easy to hear, at the same time, in just the right places for maximum satisfaction.
There’s something about Boston debut LP that makes it one of the best of all time, and although they hit it big with their single "More Than A Feeling", this album had much more to offer.

Heart - Little Queen (1977)
Hot on the heels of their platinum debut album 'Dreamboat Annie', Heart released the more ambitious, less accessible 'Little Queen'. Fortunately for them, the record contained the monolithic "Barracuda," which included one of the meanest guitar chugs since Deep Purple's "Highway Star."
The song rocketed to No. 11, and the album quickly went platinum.
The album was slightly harder than Heart's debut and FM radio stations jumped on the Led Zeppelin influenced rocker "Barracuda" (it's still a favorite on many classic rock stations today) which in my opinion is the best song on the album, followed closely by "Kick It Out" and the funky "Little Queen".
The rest of the album, however, is less than lustrous. The mandolins that are sprinkled through the album are supposed to sound mysterious, but they're pretty laughable, and songs like "Cry to Me," "Say Hello," and "Treat Me Well" don't pack enough punch to awaken even the lightest sleeper.

Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak (1976)
Thin Lizzy are an Irish hard rock band formed in Dublin in 1969. Two of the founding members, drummer Brian Downey and bass guitarist/vocalist Phil Lynott met while still in school. Lynott assumed the role of frontman and led them throughout their recording career of thirteen studio albums. Thin Lizzy are best known for their songs "Whiskey in the Jar", "Jailbreak" and "The Boys Are Back in Town", all major international hits still played regularly on hard rock and classic rock radio stations.
'Jailbreak' is surely Thin Lizzy's most exciting, tough, and touching album. Simultaneously barbarous and balletic, the 1976 set boasts the totally irresistible "The Boys Are Back in Town."
But the rest of Jailbreak lives up to that highlight, especially the riotous title track ("Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak, somewhere in this town"--yeah well, the jail seems a likely place). If Phil Lynott's poetic pretensions sometimes get the better of things, most of the album shows off his effortless power and economy; if heavy rock has a tendency to wrestle each song to the ground, Lynott and company were uniquely capable of delivering the knockout punch, graceful as a boxer or bullfighter. Jailbreak is testament to such skills.

Bad Company - Selftitled (1974)
Formed in 1973, Bad Company came to life when Rodgers was looking to start anew after the disintegration of his legendary band Free. His powerhouse vocals and songwriting were a main ingredient during Free's impressive five-year run; a period of time that saw the release of seven extremely influential albums that featured Free's minimalist blues-rock approach. Included among Free's dynamic body of work is the 1970 smash, "All Right Now," one of the most recognizable rock anthems ever recorded. Lyrics and melody by Rodgers. He was Free’s main songwriter.
Rodgers had met Mott The Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs and after jamming together and listening to new songs that Ralphs had penned and songs that Rodgers had penned, Ralphs made the decision to leave Mott and form a new band with Rodgers. The duo recruited former King Crimson bassist/vocalist Boz Burrell, added drummer Simon Kirke and Rodgers Christened the band Bad Company.
Bad Company was an instant hit worldwide. Their 1974 self-titled debut went platinum five times over and featured the smash hits, "Can't Get Enough," (a Number One single) and "Movin' On" along with electrifying rock anthems like "Ready For Love," "Rock Steady" and the title track.

Slade - Sladest (1973)
Slade were a rock band from Wolverhampton UK, who rose to prominence during the glam rock era of the early 1970s. With 17 consecutive Top 20 hits and six number ones, the British Hit Singles & Albums names them as the most successful British group of the 1970s based on sales of singles. They were the first act to have three singles enter at number one, and all six of the band's chart-toppers were penned by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea.
"Cum On Feel the Noize" was released by Slade in 1973 and was written by Jim Lea and Noddy Holder (Chas Chandler was producer)
"Cum On Feel the Noize" was Slade's fourth number-one single in the UK and their first to enter straight at number one.
As a single from Slade, it was a follow-up to "Gudbuy T' Jane", a #2-hit in the UK. The song is also often spelled as "Come On Feel the Noise", most likely due to common spelling or censorship reasons.
The song was never released on an official studio album, but did appear on their 1973 compilation LP 'Sladest'.
It would be easy to dismiss Slade as less than serious because of their title misspellings and their out-there dress sense. However, they were fantastically successful. In just four years, between 1971 and 1974, they had 12 singles that reached the top five on the UK singles charts.
In total, they released over 30 albums – three reached #1 in the UK album charts.
In the early 1970s, out-performed all other glam-rock artists including David Bowie, Sweet, Wizzard, Gary Glitter, T. Rex, Suzi Quatro, Mud, and Roxy Music.

Steppenwolf - Selftitled (1968)
Steppenwolf are a Canadian-American rock group that was prominent in the late 1960s. The group was formed in 1967 in Los Angeles by vocalist John Kay, guitarist Michael Monarch, bassist Rushton Moreve, keyboardist Goldy McJohn and drummer Jerry Edmonton after the dissolution of Toronto group The Sparrows, formed by John Kay in the early 60s, of which only Moreve was not a member.
The band has sold more than 25 million records worldwide, releasing eight gold albums and twelve Billboard Hot 100 singles of which six were Top 40 hits, including three Top 10 successes: "Born to Be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride", and "Rock Me". Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1974, but clashing personalities led to the end of the core lineup.
Today, front man John Kay is the only original member left, having served as lead singer for more than 40 years since 1967.
"Born to Be Wild" was first recorded in 1967 by Steppenwolf in a sped-up and rearranged version, that the All Music Guide's Hal Horowitz described as "a roaring anthem of turbo-charged riff rock" and "a timeless radio classic as well as a slice of '60s revolt that at once defines Steppenwolf's sound and provided them with their shot at AM immortality." "Born to be Wild" was the band's third single off their debut album and became their most successful single, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts.
"Born to be Wild" was also released on the soundtrack for the movie 'Easy Rider' (1969). Unlike the album or single version, the song on this soundtrack is accompanied by the sounds of motorcycles as an introduction.

Billy Squire - Don't Say No (1981)
This US guitarist and singer began his music career in the second half of the '70s with a band called Piper, the group broke-up in 1979, by this point Squier signed a solo contract with Capitol Records which released, one year later, his debut solo effort entitled "The Tale Of The Tape".
Squier had a string of arena rock hits in the 1980s. He is best known for the song "The Stroke" on his 1981 album release 'Don't Say No'. Other hits include "In the Dark", "Rock Me Tonite", "Lonely Is the Night", "My Kinda Lover", "Everybody Wants You", "All Night Long" and "Emotions in Motion".
'Don't Say No' was the second album by Billy Squier, released on April 13, 1981. It was one of Squier's biggest albums, including the hits "In the Dark", "Lonely Is the Night", "My Kinda Lover" and "The Stroke". The album peaked at #5 on the Billboard album chart, and it remained on those charts for 111 weeks.
The lyrics for The Stroke were misleading and the rhythm intoxicating to the young and old alike. The lyrics seemed to have very strong sexual self-gratifying connotation.
In truth, the song was about the music business, recording contracts, and the way musicians were seduced into signing them and then subsequently dropped if they didn't produce chart toppers.
Squier continued to issue albums throughout the '80s (including such titles as 1986's Enough Is Enough and 1989's Hear & Now), but it wasn't enough to prevent his audience from moving on to such younger, similarly styled acts as Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe, as the hits eventually dried up.

Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever (1977)

Hailing from Detroit, the guitarist's prodigious talents, ear-shattering volume and over-the-top onstage antics quickly earned Young Ted the moniker of "Motor City Madman," along with international acclaim.

From the ground breaking Amboy Dukes' "Journey to the Center of the Mind," to classics like "Stranglehold" and "Cat Scratch Fever," Damn Yankees chartbusters like "High Enough," cult classic "Fred Bear," and now “I Still Believe,” Ted's rapid-fire sonic assaults continue to sell out venues around the globe.

'Cat Scratch Fever' (1977) was the third studio album by American guitarist Ted Nugent and his band, as well as the name of the album's title song. Vocalist Derek St. Holmes, who had left the band during the recording of the album Free-for-All, had come back for touring in 1976 and was again the lead singer on this album.

Megaupload Is Toast!

Well, it looks like Megaupload is history, going by the reports in the New York Times and Gizmodo

This means that all of the posts on this site no longer exist, so I'm afraid it's going to be some time before I can get these reloaded onto another host site.

This is a huge pain as Megaupload was great for not deleting files after 30 days, unlike other sites such as Rapidshare etc.

Iron Butterfly - Live Sweden (1971) Ex SB

Here's an Iron Butterfly soundboard from Goteborg, Sweden in A+ quality.
With only two songs, it's not complete but they are really long songs. I just love this version of "In A Gadda Da Vida" - the drum solo isn't over the top like other versions.
In "Butterfly Bleu", guitarist Mike Pinera uses what he called the Magic Bag. Designed in 1969 by Doug Forbes, who called it simply The Bag, it was worn on a strap over the shoulder, like a wine bag, with a clear tube going to his mouth. Sound familiar? Two years later Bob Heil would develop the Talk Box, used by Joe Walsh ("Rocky Mountain Way") and Peter Frampton ("Do You Feel Like We Do") in 1973. They made it famous, but Iron Butterfly and Mike Pinera did it first.

Biography:
Archetypal American heavy metal outfit, originated out of San Diego, California, with founder member keyboards man Doug Ingle plus drummer Bushy and fellow San Diegan Jerry Penrod, Danny Weis and Darryl DeLoach. This five cut the debut album Heavy in early 1968 but group friction caused Penrod, Weis and DeLoach to quit shortly after.
In their places Ingle and Bushy recruited Boston-born guitarist Erik Braunn and multi-instrumentalist Lee Dorman.
As four-piece, the group cut the monster-selling In A-Gadda-Da-Vida set later in 1968, that album staying on the U.S. album charts for more than two years, and becoming one of the largest-grossing rock albums of all time. It was also reputedly the first ever rock group album to achieve platinum status.
Predictably, however, the disproportionate acclaim garnered by In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (title came from 17-minute composition by Doug Ingle) became something of a millstone around their necks. Braunn left in late 1969, to be replaced by the twin guitars of Mike Pinera and Larry Reinhardt (a former associate of Duane Allman).
Thus reorganised they recorded Iron Butterfly Live and Metamorphosis (both in 1970). However, the rot had long since set in. Butterfly were typical )although more explosively popular) of the run-of-the-mill West Coast heavy groups, and they were always on the decline from their 1968 peak; their pulling power dropping at an alarming rate.
After a farewell American tour they dissolved in May 1971.
However, after relatively unsuccessful alternative careers, Bushy and Braunn reunited to form a second incarnation of Iron Butterfly in 1974 with Phil Kramer (bass) and Howard Reitzes (kybds). They cut Scorching Beauty (1975), then Bill DeMartines replaced Reitzes [extract from The Illustrated New Musical Express Encyclopedia Of Rock, Salamander. 1977 p114-5].
Both Doorman and Larry Reinhardt went on to form the highly successful and legendary 'Captain Beyond' in 1972 (see previous posts).

Midnight Oil - Various 12" EP's and Singles

Midnight Oil (also known informally as The Oils to fans), were an Australian rock band from Sydney originally performing as Farm from 1972 with drummer Rob Hirst, bass guitarist Andrew James and keyboard player/lead guitarist Jim Moginie. While vocalist Peter Garrett was studying at Australian National University in Canberra, he answered an advertisement for a spot in Farm, and by 1975 the band was touring the east coast. By late 1976, Garrett moved to Sydney to complete his law degree, and Farm changed its name to Midnight Oil by drawing the name out of a hat.
Midnight Oil’s albums which peaked in the Australian Top Ten were 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Red Sails in the Sunset, Species Deceases, Diesel and Dust, Blue Sky Mining, Scream in Blue (Live), Earth and Sun and Moon, Breathe, 20,000 Watt R.S.L., Redneck Wonderland, The Real Thing, Capricornia and Flat Chat. Australian Top Ten singles were "Power and the Passion", "The Dead Heart", "Beds Are Burning" and "Blue Sky Mine". Aside from chart success, both "Power and the Passion" and "Beds Are Burning" were listed by Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) in the Top 30 best Australian songs of all time in 2001. BEDS STILL BURNINING

PICTURE THIS: FIVE SWEATY, RAGGEDY 20-somethings are backstage at Sydney's legendary Bondi Lifesaver. It's December 10, 1977. The band — towering, chrome-domed singer Peter Garrett, guitarists Martin Rotsey and Jim Moginie, bassist Peter Gifford and drummer Rob Hirst (forever after known as Midnight Oil) — have just made a pact. They are chucking in their day jobs and studies and are going to give rock & roll their best possible shot.
"And we knew we could play louder than Rose Tattoo," jokes surprisingly softly spoken frontman Peter Garrett, almost a quarter of a century later.
Today, the band is as much an Australian institution as the novels of Peter Carey or the paintings of Albert Namatijira. Hell, they even have a postage stamp created in their honour. And a tribute album (last year's Power and the Passion). And their portrait hangs in Canberra's National Gallery.
But it ain't all gravy, folks. Garrett and the erudite, talkative Hirst are relaxing at Sydney's Studio 301, laughing (now) about an incident that happened on their 20th birthday, just prior to Christmas 1997. The band somehow found themselves playing Disney World in Florida. Hirst wasn't enjoying America's Sunshine State. He had just spent several days' wages on prescription drugs to get him through an important live-to-radio show. He had pneumonia, caught a few nights earlier in bone-chilling New York. The show was a blur. Life didn't quite have the same rose-coloured hue it did in that dingy band room in Bondi.

"I was so crook," Hirst recalls. "It was the closest I'd come to totaling myself. Meanwhile, others in the band were extremely disturbed at the fact that on our 20th anniversary there we were with Mickey Mouse roadies, the whole disaster."
But Midnight Oil are survivors. Not only did Hirst endure, but the band has just released their 14th studio LP, 'Capricornia' one of the strongest of their career. The album — resonant with Jim Moginie's chiming Rickenbacker and Peter Garrett's spot-them-from-a-mile away vocals — is a far more subtle effort than the bucket of bile that was 1998's 'Redneck Wonderland'. Still there's an unmistakably Australian texture to the record; you can almost smell the eucalypts and see miles and miles of nothing in such songs as "Luritja Way" and "Crocodile Cries", while the album's titled is copped from Australian author Xavier Herbert's 1938 novel, one of the most widely-read and best-known works of Australian fiction. (In its day, Capricornia was considered hugely controversial, due to its scathing assessment of European settlers in the top end: anyone who smells a connection to Midnight Oil's politics is right on the money.) If there's a sound of wide-open spaces, then Midnight Oil — and producer Warne Liversey, now on his fourth album with the band — have captured just that. Again.
"Redneck was an angry record for angry times," Hirst figures. "We got rid of some of that bile. This record is a more uplifting, very positive record rather than hellfire and damnation. I think it's wry and dry in some ways."

As with the band's biggest success, 1987's 'Diesel and Dust', it took a trip to the outback to spark some new life into Midnight Oil, After the globetrotting and platinum-plus times of the 19805, the band had stepped off the gas during the '903. There were studio records: I993's Earth and Sun and Moon, 1996's Breathe, 1998's Redneck Wonderland. But in between there was a live album (Scream in Blue), a best of (20,000 Watt RSL) and a whole lot of downtime. Now in their 405, the band found that families and other priorities, such as Garrett's involvement with the Australian Conservation Foundation, and Hirst's moonlighting with the Backsliders and the Ghostwriters, were taking priority.
Rob Hirst has a defence prepared for all of this and more — the postage stamp and the portrait included.
"Simple as this," he says. "We toured really heavily. We had a bunch of kids — there's now about 12 or 14 baby Oils. They grew up, went to high school, and we went back to work.
"The live album came out because there was a horrible bootleg being circulated from a show recorded from a mixing desk in Switzerland. The collection album was only put together because we decided that we could control it," he says, "and it was something that held together. As for the stamp, that was something that was forced upon us — the same with the portrait. As the artist [Ex De Medici] would testify, she had very little exposure to the band."
"These kind of tributes are only misconstrued if you're not moving," says Garrett. "We knew we were still on it, still moving."
The 2000 trip to the wilderness of Papunya ("out of mobile range,"Garrett adds), was a sort of home-coming. The band hadn't visited the spot since the legendary Black-fella/Whitefella tour with the Warumpi Band in 1986. It helped the quintet and their manager, Gary Morris, get some perspective on the past and a plan for the future. They also started figuring out some new tunes.
"We were in a Land Cruiser groaning with more raw meat than six men should ever eat," Hirst recalls. "We talked about everything the band was, the Olympics, our involvement."
While in Papunya, the band did some shows for kids and caught up with locals who the band had met 15 years earlier. Garrett laughs at the recollection.
"They said, 'What are you doing, how you going'? We said that we were playing at the closing of the Olympics; they said,'Oh, we just danced at the opening'."
The band's closing ceremony statement, draped in black outfits with the word John Howard couldn't utter ("Sorry") emblazoned upon them, was the kick-start they needed to get their groove back. Most of the Olympic Stadium yelled their support; four billion TV viewers looked on, wide-eyed.
"The closing ceremony was also a kind of closing for us," Hirst adds. '"Beds Are Burning' was a strong cry about Aboriginal people in Australia, about Australians for Australians. It was a song that demanded to be sung, From my way of thinking we're at a different stage now. We're finding ways of playing together as a band, the sensuality of it." The band has also rediscovered their love of the road. A good part of 2001 was spent touring America, playing to up-for-it audiences who hadn't seen them for seven years. The reviews were universally rapturous, the venues full to bursting. Midnight Oil plan to spend much of this year doing exactly the same.
"We started only three weeks after 9/11, and we weren't sure what the Zeitgeist would be," Hirst says. "People by then wanted to get out, they were glad we were one of the bands that didn't cancel. And in America, as long as your last show was a great one in their memories, it doesn't really matter about the passage of time. "And they didn't know about the stamp, either"

The Venetians - Calling All Lions (1986) + Bonus Tracks

The Venetians formed in late 1982, when Rik Swinn (lead vocalist) arrived in Australia with a 24-track master demo of a song he'd recorded in England. He read a newspaper advert placed by two musicians looking for a lead singer. Within weeks, Swinn hooked up with David Skeet (guitar and vocals), Matthew Hughes (keyboards), Peter Watson (bass guitar) and Tim Powles (drums) to form Venetians.
The Venetians released their first single "Sound On Sound" in 1983, a version of Swinn's original demo. The band signed with Festival Records' Parole Records label. Though accompanied by a video which attracted a lot of airplay, "Sound On Sound" failed to chart significantly. Their second single "Chinese I's" generated some chart action while the band began to build their reputation as a live act. They also began work on their debut album, Step Off the Edge, produced by Vic Coppersmith-Heaven. Following the release "Ooh La La" as the first single from Step Off the Edge, they got their first major break: as opening act on the Split Enz's "Enz With A Bang" farewell tour. This led to further major tour activity with Icehouse and Nik Kershaw. By 1985, they were an Australian live attraction in their own right. The band released the second single "Shine The Light" in February 1985, and the album Step Off The Edge in May 1985.


Near the end of 1985, Venetians went into the studio with producer Mark Opitz to cut two songs, including the chartbusting "So Much For Love." As the band worked with producer Peter Blyton on the second album Calling In The Lions, "So Much For Love" scaled the Australian singles charts, peaking at number three on the national charts in March 1986. The Venetians then embarked on a two-month Australian tour, with The Church, and released "Inspiration," their follow-up to "So Much For Love." Both singles, and a third "If Somebody Loves You" are featured on Calling In The Lions, their first album released on the Chrysalis label. Chrysalis releasing Calling in the Lions and the single "So Much for Love" in the United States.

With the departure of Matthew Hughes in 1987, the Venetians spent the next year recording their third album, Amazing World. It produced three singles, "Amazing World", "Bitter Tears" and "Must Believe", but the chart success of Calling in the Lions wasn't to be repeated and the band broke up the following year.
Since 1994, Tim Powles has played drums for Scribble (985-1986), The Divinyls (1989), Angry Anderson Band (1990) and The Church where he currently plays a key role in both the management of the band and also the band’s recording process, producing their last three albums. David Skeet moved to the US in 1990 and worked as a producer/recording artist while signed to MCA Music in Los Angeles. He returned to Sydney in 1999 and continues to produce records, including projects at Tim Powles' Spacejunk studio,
Peter Watson lives in Sydney, and works in the Finance industry. He also performs occasionally with singer Louise Anton [extract from wikipedia]

This is their second album, it contains their biggest hit "So Much For Love" and several other singles which didn't chart as well - their 2nd single "Inspiration" and 3rd single "If Somebody Loves You".
The majority of their recording work had 12" remixes done as most of their hits were club oriented dance tracks...There have been some lucky individuals, who've found some of these on compilation dance albums, but the majority of them have not made it to CD. There is no "Greatest Hits " release, so I am including some of these 12" mixes here for you as bonus tracks, ripped from my own vinyl copies.

The main album featured here has been ripped from my CD copy at 320kps and includes full album artwork for both LP and CD. I've also included a scan of a limited edition poster that came with the vinyl release which has never been opened until now - awesome!
